In January 2023, Indonesia exported 81000 tons of nickel intermediate products, with 85% shipped to China
The official Indonesian Bureau of Statistics recorded an export volume of 81000 tons of downstream nickel products processed in January 2023, including nickel ice and nickel hydroxide, with a sales revenue of 654.5 million US dollars.
Among them, China is the largest export destination country, with a total installed capacity of 69500 tons, accounting for 85.8%. Japan became the second largest buyer with a shipment volume of 6600 tons, valued at $119.5 million. Next is Norway, with a total export volume of 4700 tons and a value of 67.2 trillion US dollars.
In 2022, Indonesia recorded an export volume of 5.8 million tons of nickel iron and nickel pig iron, an increase of over 60% year-on-year. Indonesian Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that the government needs to invest 15 trillion rupees to build a stainless steel sheet manufacturing plant with an annual production capacity of 1.07 million tons. This step is considered a fundamental obligation in the downstream plan for mineral products that will run simultaneously by mid-2023.
On the other hand, the government also needs to prepare an investment cost of up to IDR 8.5 trillion to build a hot rolled stainless steel advanced product processing and smelting plant with an annual production capacity of 1.07 million tons. According to Indonesia's records as of February 2023, there are 91 mineral processing plants nationwide, with 48 existing smelters and 43 smelters in the feasibility study and construction stage. The main smelters that have been put into operation are nickel smelters, with 36 units, 6 steel smelters, 2 copper smelters, and 4 aluminum smelters.
The average annual production capacity of the smelting plant is about 262000 tons/year, and the average annual production capacity of the steelmaking plant is 1.6 million tons/year. In addition, there are copper smelters with an annual production capacity of 150000 tons and aluminum smelters with an annual production capacity of 544000 tons. At present, the Ministry of Industry is paying attention to five downstream commodities, namely the copper ore industry, iron ore and sand, nickel ore and bauxite industry.
